Benchmark-Nursing Process: Approach to Care
The nursing process is used in ensuring quality care to patients. This is a scientific
method and systematic approach to care, where knowledge acquired in learning is put into
practice in determining the healthcare needs of an individual and hence providing personalized
care (McCuistion et al., 2017). The process has five steps that are sequential namely: assessment,
diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This paper is intended to utilize the nursing
process on cancer and approach to care.
Diagnosis and Staging of Cancer
According to National Cancer Institute, cancer is a disease in which some body’s cells
grow uncontrollably spreading to other body parts and can start from anywhere in the human
body (National Cancer Institute, 2021). Many symptoms are indicators of cancer but the most
common is illness, benign tumors, injury, or other problems. Diagnosis of cancer cannot be done
with a single test.
Knowing or determining the extent of cancer in the body and where it is located is called
cancer staging. It describes the severity of cancer, based on the original tumor (Amin et al.,
2018). Physical examination, historical check and diagnostic testing are among the steps of doing
a patient evaluation. This is normally done to ensure cancer is not present, and in case it is
confirmed, then it is monitored, and a plan for evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment plan is
prepared . The diagnostic procedures for cancer may include a tumor biopsy where a tumor or a
piece of the tumor is removed for analysis in the lab. The diagnostic can also be through imaging
tests such as x-rays, MRIs, ultrasound, or CT scans which provide information on the location of
