Multiple challenges are affecting the nursing profession comprising quality and safety of
patient care. As a nurse leader, you play a major role in influencing others while at the same time
coordinating resources to achieve optimal health outcomes. One of the challenges that nurse
leaders experience is the nurse staffing ratio. This is the number of nurses and nurses’ aides

Lack of adequate staff has led to an increase in negative patient outcomes on conditions
such as pneumonia, shock, urinary tract infections (Hussey & Kennedy, 2021). This has been
caused by the gradual changes in healthcare where the staffing ratio has been affected by the
work environment, lack of provision for professional development, low remuneration among
others.
Professional Standards of Practice to Rectify staffing ratio.
A higher nurse-to-patient ratio is one of the factors that cause nurse burnout. Burnout can
be defined along three dimensions namely; cynicism, emotional exhaustion, and a low sense of
personal accomplishment. ("Role strain and burnout among nurses: A public health concern,"
2020) Lowering the staffing ratio can address all the dimensions of nurse burnout to allow nurses
the time and energy they need to truly care for patients and families and build rapport with them.
When the staffing ratio is reduced, burnout in nurses is reduced due to the reduced workload.
This usually translates into better care for the patients and their family since the nurse can afford
more uninterrupted time.
Rectifying nurse staffing ration in a healthcare setting, which causes burnout in nurses, a
healthcare organization can enforce the nurse staffing standards for hospital patient safety and
quality care act. The act requires hospitals and healthcare organizations to implement and submit
to the Department of Health and Human Services a staffing plan complies with the required
nurse staffing ratios by unit (Rosenberg, 2021). Healthcare organization are also required to
