The Project Planning Framework
- Tasks can be displayed in a WBS
○ Usually broken down until we reach work
packages
§ These are something that you don’t
want to break down any further bc its
ready to be handed over to team
members
- How do we sequence these?
○ Parallel? etc
So Far
Scope -> WBS -> tasks, subtasks -> sequence
Scope
- Boundaries delineate between what we must
focus on and what we must not focus on
○ Reason is that the project will have a budget
designed to focus on whatever we need to
do within the boundary
○ If scope creeps beyond initial boundaries it
means that we are expected to do more
§ If it does happen formal then we
would also expect a formal increase in
the budget
§ However, it the increase happens
informally then we find ourselves
shaving to do more and more with the

§ However, it the increase happens
informally then we find ourselves
shaving to do more and more with the
same budget -> this is a problem
- WBS is a decomposition of the scope into work
packages representing tasks/activities for
individual team members
○ Work packages so that we can hand them
out to people
Scheduling
- Determines the ordering of tasks/activities based
on task dependencies
○ Have to determine orders before we
allocate tasks
- These can be represented as Precedence
Diagrams
○ Looking at mandatory dependencies
§ Some tasks shave to be done after
other tasks have been completed ->
cant be done in parallel
§ If two can be done in parallel, then it
doesn’t matter when we start or finish
them -> can be done togetehr
Now we incorporate task duration and resource
dependency
IT Project Resources
A resource is a source of supply or support for an
activity
- Money
- People
○ Not going to be able to get things done
without people being involved
- Materials
○ Sometimes you need some extra things to
get you there
○ Eg. Budget work
§ Might need a spreadsheet, reference
books etc
○ If it’s a physical project then you might need
physical tools
○ Training materials and user manaual
