LEARNING PLAN DETAILS

Human Heart
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOME

1. Identify the principal structure of the heart.
2. Explain how heart structure function.

INTRODUCTION
The vital importance of the heart is obvious. If one assumes an average rate of contraction of 75
contractions per minute, a human heart would contract approximately 108,000 times in one day, more

,than 39 million times in one year, and nearly 3 billion times during a 75 -year lifespan. Each of the
major pumping chambers of the heart ejects approximately 70 mL blood per contraction in a resting
adult. This would be equal to 5.25 liters of fluid per minute and approximately 14,000 liters per day.
Over one year, that would equal 10,000,000 liters or 2.6 million gallons of blood sent through roughly
60,000 miles of vessels. In order to understand how that happens, it is necessary to understand the
anatomy and physiology of the heart.

LOCATION OF THE HEART

1. What is a basic description of the heart’s function?

The basic function of the heart is to pump enough blood which carries oxygen and
nutrients to the brain and body.

2. What is the approximate size and weight of the heart?

, The heart’s size is a little larger than your fist. It measures approximately 12cm (length),
8.5 cm (width), and 6cm (thickness). The heart weighs about 10 to 12 ounces (280-340
grams) in men, and 8 to 10 ounces (230-280 grams) in women.

3. Make a list of the bones which form the protective thoracic cage around the heart

The thoracic cage around the heart is formed by 12 pairs of ribs, 12 vertebrae of the spine,
and the sternum. It is also formed by costal cartilages.

4. What is the function of the thoracic cage in regard to the heart?

The thoracic cage serves as a protection for the heart and lungs.

5. What is the location of the heart in reference to the right and left lungs?
