ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
BIOLOGY 111
LABORATORY
MANUAL
, Introduction to BIOL 111 Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory
As the first laboratory in the Anatomy and Physiology sequence, this lab is designed to satisfy the
requirements of health sciences programs, the needs of the pre-professional student and those who
desire a deeper understanding of the human body. We will begin with labs that will cover an
introduction to the human body, the microscope, the cell and tissues. We will follow these with a
number of structural labs. Through extensive work with human anatomical models, the student will
be able to identify and describe the structural anatomy of the human body with respect to the following
four systems: skeletal, muscular, nervous and digestive. Please bring this lab manual with you
when attending a closed lab session, or when studying in the Independent Study Lab.
CANVAS Information:
CANVAS is the online learning management system that is used throughout Brookdale. It is where you
will find valuable information that will help you pass the laboratory portion of this course. It is also
where you will find any updated course information such as announcements and/or schedule changes.
It is your responsibility as a student to check Canvas regularly for any changes to the course that may
occur throughout the semester.
In order to use Canvas you will need Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome Internet Browser.
To log in:
o From the BCC homepage, click on „MyBrookdale‟.
o Enter username and password. It is the same as you would use for your BCC email, and it
should have been mailed to you.
o On the left hand side of the screen, under „QuickLaunch Navigation‟, select the red circular icon
called „CANVAS‟.
o Once logged into CANVAS, hover over the „Courses‟ button at the top of the screen, then select
„BIOL-111LAB-xxxRL‟. (If your lecture instructor is using CANVAS, the lecture title will be
„BIOL-111-xxxRL‟.)
o Use the „Modules‟ tab to the left of the screen to access lab materials, such as word documents to
quiz yourself for practicals (tests), weekly lab schedule, practical information, and the
Independent Study lab schedule.
o Use the „Grades‟ tab to access practical grades and your lab average.
A
, BIOL 111/112 LAB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Attendance: Lab attendance is strongly recommended.
2. Conduct: It is expected that students will conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the
Student Conduct Code published in the Brookdale Student Handbook. Failure to do so can result in
dismissal from the course.
3. General Rules: The following rules apply to both the closed lab and open lab:
NO FOOD OR DRINK, NO SMOKING, NO CHILDREN
4. Closed Lab Sessions:
Any student that misses a closed lab session is responsible for making up the missed work on his or
her own. The student may make arrangements with the lab instructor to make up the lab before the
student's next scheduled closed lab session. Please note that in some instances such arrangements
may not be possible due to the weekly change of lab topics.
5. Independent Study Lab (Open Lab):
A. A staffed open lab (room MAS 056) is available for students to study the material presented
during closed lab sessions.
B. Students must sign in at the front desk upon entering the open lab, put away all lab materials
when finished, and sign out upon leaving.
C. In some instances a student I.D. card will be required to check out lab materials for use in the
open lab. With proof of current registration, student I.D.s are given free of charge in Room 109
of the Warner Student Life Center.
D. ***Students are NOT permitted to study in the open lab on the day of their practical***
If this rule is violated, you will receive a zero for that practical.
6. Final Lab Average:
A. Every student must successfully complete the assigned lab work in order to pass this course.
The final lab average is worth 25% of a student's final grade.
B. The assigned lab work consists of 4 timed lab tests ("practicals") for BIOL 111 or 3 lab
practicals for BIOL 112. Practicals are based upon the information presented during closed lab
sessions. The final lab average is the average from all of your practical grades.
B
, 7. Lab Practicals:
A. All practical grades, including failing grades, will be averaged together to determine your
final lab average. A final lab average of at least 65% is required to pass this course. If this
minimum lab average is not achieved, you will fail the entire course. An overall grade of C or
better is required if this course is a pre-requisite course.
B. If a student is to miss a lab practical for any reason:
1. The student must notify the lab instructor, via a phone call, on THE DAY OF
THEIR PRACTICAL. If your lab instructor is not notified on that day, you will
not be eligible to make up the practical.
2. In order to be eligible to make up the practical, the student must also provide proper
documentation. No more than one make-up practical is permitted even with proper
documentation.
3. Students who miss a lab practical and do not notify us on that day, and/or do not
provide satisfactory documentation, will receive a grade of 0% for that practical.
4. As long as the student has a passing grade in lecture and lab, any eligible make-up must
be taken during the scheduled make-up week at the END of the semester. If the student is
failing lab or lecture or cannot come to the scheduled make-up, the student will receive a
grade of 0% for that practical.
8. College Closings:
A. To find out if Brookdale is closed due to inclement weather or for any other reason,
you can call Brookdale‟s main campus number, 732-224-2345, listen to the college radio
station, WBJB 90.5 (or any local station) or log onto the Brookdale website at
www.brookdalecc.edu. You can also opt into receiving text alerts from this website.
B. If your closed lab is cancelled due to a college closing, you may contact your lab
instructor via email or Canvas to find out any schedule changes.
C. If a practical is cancelled due to a college closing, contact your lab instructor via
email or Canvas for schedule changes. You may be asked to come in and take the practical
on your own time before the next scheduled closed lab session.
D. If the college is closed THE DAY BEFORE you take your practical, you will still be
expected to take the practical on your scheduled day at your scheduled time. SO DO
NOT LEAVE ALL OF YOUR STUDYING FOR THE DAY/NIGHT BEFORE THE
PRACTICAL!
E. In the event of a delayed opening, classes/labs that start before the announced opening
are cancelled, classes/labs that start at or after the announced opening are held. If you
have a practical cancelled due to a delayed opening, you may contact your lab instructor
for schedule changes, or if you wish, to make arrangements to take the practical later
that day when the college is open.
