INTRODUCTION
Guisguis National High School is one of the schools situated in the
remote areas of Sta. Cruz, Zambales. Although it is still very accessible by
regular public transportations (tricycles), the ten (10) kilometer distance from
the town proper of Santa Cruz coupled with rough and dusty (on summer and
muddy on rainy season) road classified it under the remote or far-flung schools.
For almost 50 years, Guisguis NHS has served as the only secondary school in
Santa Cruz that caters to the learners across from Region I and Region III
together.
Its geographic location makes it more accessible to the following
barangays: (Region III) Guisguis, Canaynayan, Tabalong, Guinabon, Babuyan
(Sta. Cruz) and Babuyan (Pangasinan) Putol, Doliman, Nangalisan (Region I).
Among these barangays, Babuyan is the furthest which is about 22-25
kilometers from the school. Due its distance, many learners leave their families
and decided to live within the vicinity of Guisguis since this is the nearest school
they can attend.
Due to poverty, most of the learners choose to walk their way home or
to school rather than ride to “pogpog” (it is a unique amphibian-like ride similar
to a jeepney but slightly higher and longer) because it cost a lot. In order to
save of their allowance, many of them walk their way home for about 4-5 hours,
