Exam (elaborations) NR 506 Week 2 TD Identify your selected healthcare policy priority and discuss the rationale for your selection. Describe the model of policy making that you feel would be best applied to your policy issue and the rationale for selecting this model. For my policy priority I decided on patient safety and how poor staffing and nurse burnout affect it. Patient safety should be the number one priority and concern of all medical facilities and professionals. Every facility will have policies in regards to patient safety however, their nurse to staff ratio and work environments to prevent burnout are insufficient. There are also those policies related to patient safety that are not in conjuncture with reality, such as who qualifies for a 1:1 sitter. At my current hospital, a very large hospital system that spans over Central Florida, they just had budget cuts and laid off a rather large number of patient care techs and will no longer allow nurses to get overtime, overtime which was always available only because nurses were needed for the amount of patients we have. Now, if a patient needs a 1:1 sitter the techs are no longer available to watch them however nurses are still held responsible if the patient falls. Also, nurses are now being tripled on a daily basis. To make it worse, they are not tripling these nurses with the patient’s rooms right next to each other; the patients are spread out and even on the other side of the floor. According to Cho et al. (2015), an inadequate working environment affects both nurses and patients in a negative manner; nursing burnout and turnover increases, patient satisfaction decreases and patient mortality rates increase. I believe incrementalism is the model that would be best applied to my policy. I say this because there are safety policies already in place however; these policies need to be updated in order to correspond with what happens in real life. It is better to make small changes in already existing policies rather than completely overhaul them all at once. Cho, E., Sloane, D. M., Kim, E., Kim, S., Choi, M., Yoo, I. Y., & ... Aiken, L. H. (2015). Effects of nurse staffing, work environments, and education on patient mortality: an observational study. Mobile devices and social media have taken over society. You cannot go anywhere these days without seeing about ninety percent of the population glued to their smart phone or tablet. You see it while people are eating at restaurants, while people are walking down the street, and even worse, when people are driving. The issue is rampant in young adults, or the millennials, but it is also bad in older adults. Texting and driving or doing anything on the phone while driving can be detrimental. In Florida they passed the law that it is illegal to text and dive. If a cop sees you texting and driving you will get a hefty ticket. Even wit these laws in place I see people texting and driving all the time. The other day I was driving home from work on a long, winding road when a car passed me going the opposite direction. The female driving the car was probably in her mid thirties and was looking down at her phone as she was navigating around a sharp curve! I was dumbfounded! Your idea of implementing more educational campaigns and stricter laws is definitely much needed! INSTRUCTOR: Thank you for the clarification and further information. I like your multipleissue approach. From my experience, just because the food is catered in, does not mean it is nutritious. My son attended a private school for junior high school and they catered in food three days per week. He packed his lunch the other days, but wanted to eat this food because it was a social thing and the other kids purchased the food. We let him do this and it was the only year that he gained weight (7th grade) inappropriately. They still had this program during eight grade and he opted not to eat it on his own (yay). Their idea of catered food was various sub sandwiches and the like from local eateries. In high school, he took his lunch every day by choice because he did not want to eat "greasy food" as he called it. Dr. H, When I was in elementary and middle school the only food they catered was pizza. The rest of the days were not any better, with the usual options of macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets, and school made pizza. I understand that the unhealthy food options are cheaper and therefore that is why kids were fed this way. Nowadays it seems that the school systems have wised up, or at least listened to those who advocated for change. I do not have children myself however my friends with kids have relayed to me that they now offer healthy alternatives. I was surprised when I read Lisa’s post that some schools even offer gluten free meals. This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :03:31 GMT -05:00 This study resource was shared via CourseH As an overweight child I believe that health and nutrition needs to start at home and the schools should then back it up. I personally feel that kids should not even be offered the choice of an unhealthy meal. Children in elementary and middle schools have a harder time making health conscious food choices and if it is not instilled in them at a young age they will most likely continue making poor food choices as teenagers and adults. Of course there are exceptions to this, at fifteen I decided I wanted to loose weight, joined a gym and never looked back. It seems like your son is another exception to this rule. It shows good parenting on your part that he was able to make such a decision on his own, especially since it is highly probable that some of his friends continued eating the catered food.
