Exam (elaborations) NR 506 Week 8 TD Chamberlain University In the article by Kohl, H.W., Craig, C. L., Lambert, E.V., Inoue, S., Alkandari, J.R., Leetonngin, G., Kahlmeier, K. (2012), a systems approach to dealing with the global issue of physical inactivity is discussed. Describe how you would advocate for increased physical activity in the global arena. Who would be the key stakeholders and how would you get them involved in this policy? What are cultural considerations here? Strong evidence shows that physical inactivity increases the risk for many adverse health problems that can lead to chronic illnesses and even death. Surprisingly, physical inactivity is the forth-leading cause of death worldwide (Kohl, Craig, Lambert, Inoue, Alkandari, Leetonngin, & Kahlmeier, 2012). A sedentary lifestyle can lead to adverse health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weight gain/obesity, and metabolic syndrome (Barwais, Cuddihy, & Michaud Tomson, 2013). Per Barwais et al. (2013), the increase in sedentary behavior can be linked to the popularity of video games, using computers, and watching television. The article by Solmon (2015), indicates that the social-ecological model supplies a framework that shows the complex network of factors affecting behavior choices via interaction between people and the environment. Solomon (2015), indicated this model has been applied in multiple settings and can be used to identify key elements for success. Social networking is a popular and easy way to identify, monitor, and encourage physical activity for the management of health related issues. Using this model to promote physical activity could allow for the balance of social networking, behaviors, and interactions among society. I think the majority of nurses are built with the want and need to help people. To me, this is why you routinely see nurses advocating issues at legislative levels and beyond. As a nurse concerned about this issue I would meet with local and state representatives to advocate for change at the state level. If the initiative worked then I would encourage them to speak to legislators in other states as well. First and foremost I would suggest using social media to get the word out. For those that do not participate in social media, I would mail out postcards or pamphlets to educate people and encourage them to join the cause. The key stakeholders would be parents, students, teachers, healthcare workers, patients, legislators, communities, and policymakers. A good way to get these people involved would be to start by implementing policies that support physical education programs by focusing on accountability and a collaboration of all involved. These efforts should start by focusing on those with the highest risk factors and then working the way around the community. If the initiative caught on and progressed worldwide, an understanding of culture and sensitivity would be a must in developing a global policy. All involved in the initiative would need to realize they play key roles in the development and take it seriously. Ensuring everyone (people and countries) involved has the same goal will make it easier to follow but also more entertaining to reach goals together.
