Case Study #3
In the given case study, the father of a 10-year-old boy calls the office requesting
assistance for an individualized educational plan (IEP). The child was recently diagnosed with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The father requests that the provider contact the school
and facilitate an IEP being developed. For this discussion, confidentiality between patient and
provider will be discussed along with possible interventions and management strategies for the
patient.
Confidentiality
It is important for the provider to provide confidentiality regarding patient diagnosis and
treatment as requested by the parents. This patient has been diagnosed with ADHD, and the
father is requesting an IEP for the child at his school. The confidentiality regarding the patient
and parent is not an issue because the parent is requesting this on behalf of the patient. The
confidentiality issue comes to play with what to discuss with the school regarding the patient.
Privacy rights allow parents to make decisions about their child’s care which can include
immunization refusal and lifesaving treatments (Schapiro, 2009). Parents should be encouraged
to review educational plans and advocate for the child (Burns, et al, 2017). Older children in
some states can direct their medical care (Schapiro, 2009).
Interventions and Management Strategies
There are many interventions and strategies to implement when helping to obtain an IEP
