Nestled on the east side of the San Francisco Bay Area, you will find the county of
Alameda. With Oakland, Ca being the largest metropolitan city in this county, Alameda County
also consist of the following incorporated cities: Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Dublin, Emeryville,
Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Newark, Piedmont, Pleasanton, San Leandro, and Union City
(County of Alameda, 2016). With a population of 1,638,215, Alameda County is one of the most
diverse urban areas with White (51%), Black or African American (11.8%), Asian (29.5%), and
Hispanic (22.6%) (US Census Bureau, 2016). Although from 2000-2010 there were only a 4.6%
growth within Alameda County Hispanic/Latino increased 24.1% and Asian ethnicity increased
by 33.4% (Bautista et al., 2014). According to County of Alameda (2016), “53 languages spoken
by English language learners in the K-12 public school systems”.
Out of the 10 leading causes of death in Alameda County, cancer (24.5%) & heart disease
(21.7%) are the highest. However, the greatest improvement in mortality was stroke which
dropped 47% from 2000-2012. The overall life expectancy in Alameda County is 81.9 years.
(Bautista et al., 2014).
Alameda County has a wide variety of regional parks, wild life, vineyards, wineries,
zoo’s and lakes. There are plenty of places for recreational activities from hiking, camping,
fishing and more. Alameda County is also home to Oakland Athletics and Golden State Warriors.
Alameda County is also known for is educational systems including University of California,
Berkley (“Alameda County, California,” 2016).
