The digestive system is made up of the alimentary canal and the associated organs.
The main functions of the digestive system are digestion and absorption.

The alimentary canal is a tube leading from the mouth to the anus. It consists of the
oesophagus, stomach, small intestines and large intestines, caecum, appendix and
rectum. It is long and greatly folded to increase the surface area for digestion and
absorption of food.
