AP II Lab 7: Reproductive System

The human reproductive system is defined as a sexual reproductive system:

• There are two parents or a biparental system meaning offspring receives genes from two parents
• Parents produce gametes (sex cells) that meet together to form fertilized egg or zygote. Games
must have two properties: mobility and ability to provide nutrients. One cell cannot provide one;
both need to provide. One cannot because then it would be too heavy and unable to move.

Sperm is the male sex cell; smallest in the body; very motile= consists of DNA and mitochondria in tail

Egg: large and heavy nutrient; largest human cell; can be seen with naked eye in some cases

Primary and sex organs

• Primary sex organs gonads (testes and ovaries)
• Secondary sex organs: ducts and glands, penis allows for storage of sperm; uterus, uterine
tube, vagina allows for storing of egg; zygote to fertilize into a fetus baby grows.

Male reproductive system

Scrotum: a pouch; arises from stomach contains testis (endocrine and exocrine gland); produce sex cells and

hormones (testosterone). Endo releases hormones directly into blood stream.

Cells are designed to produce sperm (seminiferous tubules); spermatogenic cells.

Interstitial cells found between seminiferous tubules produce testosterone (steroid) allows for male
reproductive system, secondary sex characteristics

Testis develop first in the abdomen inside the abdominal cavity and descend into scrotal sac by the inguinal
canal.

Cryptocitoism: condition where testes do not fully descend. Can be corrected surgically if not can lead to
infertility or testicular cancer.

Epididymis: coil tube where sperm mature and are stored until ready for elimination from body (turns 180
degrees to reach the vas deferens). Sperm stored longer than 40- 60 days are infertile are reabsorbed by the
body. Turns into the vas deferens (propels sperm out of male reproductive tract) then reaches to urethra
where It is ejaculated from the body. Site of which vasectomy is performed which cuts the urethra.

Vas deferens (ductus deferens) merges with the seminal vesicle and into the ejaculatory duct- the urethra
(shared by the sperm and urine/ both travel) urethra is enclosed in the penis. P

Penis is made up of 3 masses of erectile tissue- corpus spongiosum (1) and corpus cavernosum (2)

Female Reproductive System

Much more complex; Provides safe harbor; Provides nutrients to baby; large space and sex cells

Female gonad is the ovary; Gonad (ovary) are both endocrine and exocrine gland (estrogen)
