1. What is the definition of psychology?
○ The science of (or the study of) mental processes and behavior.
2. Contrast a “ behavior” from a “mental process”

○ APA American Psychological association- set standards therapy
4. Identify the main characteristics of the subfields of psychology:
○ Forensic Psychology- Psychological principles to legal issues, jury selection,
eyewitness testimony, criminal profiling
○ industrial/organizational Psychology- “I/O Psychology”, study of human
behavior in the workplace. Worker satisfaction,employee hiring and evaluation,
people and machine

○ Biological Psychology - Emphasis on brain, nervous system, and genetics
i. Brain + Nervous system - serial killer show different brain function than
average
ii. Genetics- Adoption ( similar to adoptive parents biologically, and
psychologically). We are more like our parents by genetics not by
environment.
○ Developmental Psychology- Examine physical, cognitive, and social change
through lifespan. Change in infants,adolescents, and adults over time.
○ Cognitive Psychology - Examines how we perceive, think, and solve problems
due to perception, memory, reasoning, not concern about age but the events,
looking at information and interpreting.
○ Social Psychology - The scientific study of how we view and affect each other
(pg. 5), situational influences. Not concerned with age, looks at attitudes, certain
kinds of aspect in a specific situations.
○ Clinical Psychology - Evaluation + treatment of psychological disorder, believes
in connection with family, cannot give drug therapy
○ Psychiatry -Evaluation + treatment of psychological disorders, can give drug
therapy, doesn't believe in family connection
○ Counseling Psychology -deals with abnormal issues and everyday stress rather
than psychological disorders
i. Marriage problems or anger management
ii. If there is a disorder then patients are sent to a clinical psychology
