Cyclizine
BASICS: DOSAGE:
• Antiemetic / anti-sickness • 50mg t.d.s maximum
• POM
• Ampules or tablets
• IM, IV or orally
• Prevents nausea + vomiting
• May be used prophylactically in surgery
SIDE EFFECTS: PHARMACODYNAMICS:
• Abdo pain • Histamine receptor antagonist in emetic
• Constipation + diarrhoea centre in brain - signals do not get to the
brain to make you think you feel sick
• Hyper/hypotension
• Reduces sensitivity of emetic centre
• Blurred vision
• Metabolised in first 30 minutes
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
• 20 hour half life
• Not to be used with epileptics
INTERACTIONS: FETAL/BREASTFEEDING RISK:
• Enhances affects of pethidine • Okay in small doses in 1st trimester
• Enhances CNS suppressants • Some tetragenic studies
• Not to be used in last 2 weeks of
pregnancy as may cause fibroplasia
GUIDELINES:

• Midwives exemptions
