Augmentin (Co-amoxiclav)
BASICS: DOSAGE:
• Antibiotic - broad spectrum penicillinase • 375mg or 625mg (if severe infection) t.d.s.
against amoxicillin resistant organisms tablets orally
• UTIs, prophylaxis • 600mg-1.2g if IV infusion
• POM
• Tablets, suspension, powder for
reconstitution
SIDE EFFECTS: PHARMACODYNAMICS:
• Nausea • Semi-synthetic penicillin that inhibits
• Diarrhoea enzymes that are involved in cell wall
synthesis
• Rashes
• Augmentin contains amoxicillin and
• Rarely - hepatic impairments
clavulanic acid that inactivates beta
CONTRAINDICATIONS: lactamase enzymes which stops the
amoxicillin being affected and therefore it
• Penicillin hypersensitivity
can kill the resistant bacteria
• Hepatic dysfunction :
• Eliminated via the kidneys
INTERACTIONS: FETAL/BREASTFEEDING RISK:
• Anticoagulants • Benefits must outweigh the risks if using
it - from manufacturer
• Methotrexate
• Not for use in 1st trimester
• Crosses into breastmilk - can cause
GUIDELINES:
diarrhoea and constipation as it can affect
• BNF - avoid in PPROM as possible the gut flora
increased risk of necrotising enterocolitis
in newborns
