• Read notes - is it appropriate - no contraindications? Allergies?
• Consider privacy, dignity + comfort
• Consent - Do they understand what the drug is and what it does? Does she know the potential side
effects for the baby (if AN) and herself? Does she have any questions?
• If happy to go ahead, explain that you need to leave the room to prepare it and will come back with a second
midwife - will knock before entering
• Check prescription chart, is it prescribed by doctor? Right client? Right dose? Right route (oral), Right time?
• Collect equipment needed - water, drug, prescription chart
• Check preparation and expiry with 2nd midwife
• Check prescription chart, is the dose correct? When was last dose given? Correct time to give current dose?
• Work out drug calculation if needed - how many tablets needed?
• Wash hands and put on gloves
• Put correct number of tablets into small container
• Check credentials with women and ID bands, clarify no allergies
• Give tablets to women + water, ensure she has taken them before leaving the room
• Dispose of all equipment into clinical waste bin - ensure drug packet is back in locked drug trolley
• Document in woman’s notes and prescription chart (also CTG or partogram if in labour)
• Observe woman for any adverse reactions and effectiveness of drug.
