RE: Letter of Advice to Søren Nielsen
Dear Mr. Nielsen,
My name is Amber Bijkerk, I am an intern at Doughty Street Chambers and in this letter of advise, I
will be writing about the relevant facts about the case, your legal status from your UN work, which
protection that legal status will provide, a recommendation for any further steps and a conclusion.
The issue in this case we are facing is whether Søren Nielsen is entitled to immunities and therefore
whether he can be prosecuted for the unlawful possession of child pornography.
Relevant facts
According towards the fact pattern Mr. Nielsen started his position as UN special rapporteur on 23 rd of
July 2021.1
Nielsen was investigated by the police on the first of December 2021, a file of 500mb child
pornography was found and Mr. Nielsen explained that the found child pornography was for his work
as special rapporteur of the UN. However, the police still charged Nielsen for the found material on
the basis that it was beyond what was required for his work. The child pornography was downloaded
after he started his current position as UN special rapporteur on the 23 rd of July 2021.
