client - customer; clientele - collection of clientele, plural form

CLIENT
• a person who is recipient of professional service (in healthcare; professional healthcare
• receives healthcare regardless the state of his/her health
• a patient
○ patient - greek pathos, “passion”, in healthcare pathein, “suffering”
§ a person who is waiting for or is undergoing medical treatment
§ a client is a person who may or may not be sick but engages the advice of a
professional

LEVEL TWO: FAMILY CLIENTELE
• a group of people related by blood, marriage, or adoption living together (us census, 20
• two or more people who live in the same household, share a common emotional bond a
certain interrelated social tasks (spradley and allender, 2000)
• family as a client
○ family is first, individuals are second
• family as a system
○ the whole is more than the sum of its part
○ treat the family as a whole
○ simultaneously focus on individual and treat the family as a whole
• family is considered as the basic unit of healthcare
