PROTEINS
,AMINO ACIDS
Amino acids are the building block of protein
~20 (+2) standard amino acids are naturally
occurring amino acids
All proteins are made up from the same set
of 20 standard amino acids.
, All 20 amino acids have common structural features
All amino acids have an amino group (-NH3+), a
carboxylate (-COO-) group and a hydrogen bonded
to the same carbon atom (the α-carbon)
Proline is the exception to the rule in that it has a
secondary amino group. It is really an -imino acid
They differ from each other in their side chain
called R group.
R groups vary in structure, size and electric charges
and influence the solubility of amino acids in water.
