A. SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE
1. Key Findings
The Premature Death rate is higher in Dekalb County (7,500) than the Top
U.S. Performers (5,400) but slightly under the state of Indiana (8,300).
The percentage of Alcohol-impaired deaths in Dekalb County has
significantly dropped over the last several years compared to the state
percentages.
The percentage of sexually transmitted infections has been on the rise since
2014 and is higher than the national percentage.
The percentage of patients that the primary care providers have compared to
the state and national percentages is staggering. The current ratio is 2160:1.
The percentage of children in poverty is equal to the percentage of Indiana
and 5% higher than that of the national percentage.

2. Introductory paragraph
In the table shown below (Sociodemographic Profile Table) the U.S. Census
Bureau provided census information from Dekalb County, Indiana compared to the United
States. Within this information some of the key figures that stick out that could affect the
counties health issues are that there is a higher percentage of persons living in the county
under the age of 65 with a disability and without healthcare compared to the U.S. average,
over half of the county are female and the percent of persons living in poverty is just
slightly below the national average.
Some other notable figures are that 97.4% of the county population is White alone,
the percent of the county with a high school or higher education is 90.2% vs. the national
average of 88% and the population per square mile is 116.4 vs. the national average of
