KIN 352: DEPRESSION EXAM TEST
Describe the results of the Dunn et al. (2005) study. What did this study determine about dose
of exercise?
• Dose –response effect – for every treatment there are certain amount.
• Some people work 3 and some 5 days a weeks.
• 4 total groups – The public health dose of exercise was more effective in reduction depression score
to a clinical acceptable level than lower dose or control condition. Frequency of exercise (three or
five days/week) was not important.
Discuss each of Hill’s criteria for establishing a causal link between depression and exercise
and whether or not those criteria are met.
• Hill’s criterial are the broadly accepted from science community. (to test the effect of PA
on depression) the result shown:
• Strength criterial: association – moderate to large. Met
• Consistency of evident – whether if is consistency to all, exercise and depression. Met
• Specificity of effect – depression only condition associate with inactivity. Is not met.
• Temporal sequencing – do we have evident one thing comes before another. Activity come
before depression or depression comes first. Met
• Dose response relation – evident dose response relation – yes – criteria is met
• Biological mechanism – does exercise have biological effects. Met
• Coherence – Met
, • Experimental evident- research – experimental evident – Yes. Met
What are some of the limitations and challenges with the research on exercise and depression?
• Small sample size, relatively small.
• Social interaction bias
• Double blind study. impossible
• Resentful demoralization – when get really sad if they not got chosen.
• Control group doing PA/exercise on their own without control.
• Issue with measurement
Describe what it means to say that depression can be defined along a continuum. Can PA have
an impact at all points along that continuum?
o All of us get depress periodically, very normal reaction to have to specific
o Depression can be minimal, moderate to severe.
What are the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for depression?
o Both subclinical and clinic depress are bad. Even it is subclinical depression still have risk potential
o Physical Activity can have both positive impact on both Sub-clinical and Clinical depression.
DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis of depression
o You have to have at least 5 symptoms following symptoms have been during the same 2
week period, nearly every day, and represent a change in previous functioning.
o At least one must be depressed mood or loss of interest/pleasure.
