Things to know for Maternal Exam 1
- Know the difference between placenta previa and abruption placental
o Placenta previa
Covering of the cervical OS
Partial (Marginal)

Bright red blood and isNOTpainful
o Abruptio Placenta
Separation of the placenta from the uterine wall
Bright or dark Red blood and is verypainful
Rigid abdomen
o EMERGENCY SITUATION
- Know how to treat an incompetence cervix and for whom
o Cerclageis done (cervical stitch)
Used for moms that have had multiple miscarriages
Removed at 38 weeks for delivery of baby
- Know the s/s of pre-eclampsia and nursing interventions
o S/S of pre-eclampsia
Headache that will not go away
Right upper abdominal pain
Indicates liver damage and is apriority
o Interventions
Seizure precautions
- Know the stages of labor
, o 1ststage
Onset of contractions to full dilation (10cm)
o 2ndstage
Complete dilation to delivery of baby
o 3rdstage
Delivery of placenta
Make sure to inspect for full attachment
o 4thstage
2 hours post delivery of placenta
Monitor for hemorrhage
Mom baby bonding time
- Know station and location
o Station 0
Located at the ischial spine
o If it is a positive number baby is passed the ischial spine
o If it is a negative number baby is above the ischial spine
- Know about transverse lie
o If baby is in transverse position and MD wrights an order to induce labor with Pitocin as
the nurse, we want to question that order
o We do not induce labor that involves transverse lie
- Know agitation level’s
o If mom is 8cm dilated and contractions are 2-3 minutes apart and mom is irritable and
agitated(this is normal)
- Know what to do and the signs of supine hypotension
o Compression of the inferior vena cava syndrome
