PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
1. Nitrogen fixation is a natural process by which inert or unreactive forms of nitrogen are
transformed into usable nitrogen. Why is this process important to life?
This process is important because through them plants are able to supply their
nitrogen needs and provide this element to humans and other animals whose
nitrogen is essential.
2. Given what you have learned about the hydrogen bonding shared between nucleic acids
in DNA, which pair is more stable under increasing heat: adenine and thymine, or
cytosine and guanine? Explain why.
Under increasing heat, the more stable pair is Guanine and Cytosine because
their composition consists of 3 hydrogen bonds while Thymine and Adenine
consist of 2 hydrogen bonds.
3. Which of the following is not an organic molecule: methane (CH 4), fructose (C6H12O6),
rosane (C20H36), or ammonia (NH3)? How do you know?
Out of these four molecules ammonia only consists of Nitrogen and Hydrogen and
doesn’t contain any carbon and this makes ammonia a non-organic molecule.
