Orem’s Self-Care Theory in Research
In this paper Orem’s Self-Care theory will be discussed on how it is used in two
different research studies. The first study researches the effects of teaching Orem’s self-care
theory model to nursing students. The second research discusses the relationship between
prenatal self-care and adverse birth outcomes in young women. The remainder of the paper will
go on to discuss the two research studies and how Orem’s Self-Care Theory was used.
Purpose of Research Study 1
The first research study that will be discussed is a study on the effect of teaching
Orem’s self-care model on nursing students’ clinical performance and patient satisfaction
(Malekzadeh, Amouzeshi, Mazlom, 2017). This was a quasi-experimental quantitative study to
determine the effect of teaching Orem’s self-care theory model on nursing students during their
clinical experience and the outcome it has on patient satisfaction.
Use of Self-Care Theory Model in Research Study 1
Orem’s Self-Care Theory model was taught to a random pick of 66 students divided into
an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group went through a training
based off of Orem’s Self-Care theory model and the control group based off of the routine
nursing process method. The overall goal was to see if teaching Orem’s self-care theory model
could help improve patient satisfaction. “Orem’s self-care model leads to lower healthcare
costs, quality care development and patient outcome improvement” (Malekzadeh et al., 2017).
Self-Care Theory Model Operational Use in Research Study 1
To determine the effects of Orem’s self-care theory model first data was collected using
two different questionnaire tools. This was a quantitative research study using a researcher made
