Personal essay questions: 10 lines maximum for each essay (1.0)
Why should a biosafety program oversee Biology teaching laboratories?
The Biosafety program outlines the necessary guidelines that are implemented in a
laboratory to ensure a safe and protected environment. In turn, this limits any
accidental situations and minimizes accidents that could be potentially fatal if they
occur. The rules are set for the protection of the people, live specimens, organisms in
the lab. Thus, it’s important to be educated about the evident risks and regulations
regarding lab safety procedures, types of materials used and any health precautions.
Training is required for students before they participate in any labs, this grants
knowledge about the state of the lab, its requirements, materials, procedure and so
on. As well as it outlines the need to wear protective gear such as, a full sleeve lab
coat, eye goggles and gloves. Therefore, the biosafety program oversees biology
teaching laboratories to maintain correct procedures, outlines and experiments in the
lab with minimal risk factors. They consist of information regarding different types of
microorganisms, effects of specific solvents, levels of exposure and so on. In order to
receive proper results in labs and protect oneself, it is crucial to follow and abide by
the rules set in the biosafety program. This leads to a successful lab experiment wit
minimal threats to the health and safety of the individual.
How can you ensure, as a student, that you will be working safely in the laboratory?
As a student working in the laboratory, I will ensure that I am abiding by all the set-out
regulations outlined in the biosafety procedures. I’d make sure to not bring any food
or drinks into the lab, as they could become contaminated. Beforehand, I would plan
out what I need to wear, avoiding any loose materials, wearing shoes that cover my
toes and making sure that I have my goggles and lab coat. Upon entering the lab, I
would make sure that I have all the necessary equipment before I begin to conduct an
experiment. Such as, the required solvents, solutes, beakers, flasks etc. When
moving around inside, I should know where I’m heading and not mindlessly wander
around. If there are any accidents or spills, it would be my responsibility to let the
professor know as soon as it happens, so it does not result in a hazard for anyone
else in the laboratory. As well as, I will be aware of the emergency exits, disposal
stations, eye cleaning stations, fire extinguisher and fire blanket so I’m prepared for
any emergency. During the lab, I would also make sure to not come in contact with
any solutions, solvents or solutes that may be harmful when in contact with the skin.
When I need to smell a solution, I would waft the scent towards me, rather than
