Planned Change: Leadership of Reduction in Workforce
Roxboro Medical Center was the only hospital serving the rural area for a 75-mile radius
until two years ago. Over the past three years, there has been a forty percent decline in market
share, continuing after losing ten percent of employees offered early retirement, decreasing staff
hours, and redeployment to other hospital facilities last year. The organization finds itself in a
problematic situation where cuts must occur to remain compliant with staffing ratios. The Chief
Nursing Officer (CNO) must complete a reduction in workforce (RIF) of leadership positions.
Approach to the Organizational Mandate
Healthcare organizations must constantly assess their financial resources, outgoing and
incoming, to survive in this competitive field where patients can receive their medical care.
Organizational trimming symbolizes the tactical cutback on an organization's workforce,
providing efforts to decrease labor costs and increase profits to prevent corporate bankruptcy
(Frone & Blais, 2020; Frone, 2018). After completing an analysis, Roxboro Medical Center
found themselves losing financial resources and decided that the reconstruction of leadership
roles by thirty percent is the only option. Jensen et al., 2018 wrote that in order for companies to
remain current with cost-efficiency and increase productivity restructuring is vital. This
assignment aims to apply leadership knowledge, skills, and attributes KSA to develop an
organizational change plan impacting the entire institute.
The paper will discuss the CNO's process development of a chosen model for change,
rationale, challenges, and conflicts of choosing who to RIF with and without HR's provided
information. Also, explain how the leadership team will be restructured and impact Roxboro
Medical Center, employees, patients, and community. Describe the change model's conflicts and
benefits and two strategies addressing morale and motivation when implementing system
