INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY 2 lecture 1.4
CONSCIOUSNESS
Sleep deprivation can result in a range of problems, including:
● Memory problems
● Changes in behaviour, e.g. ↑ aggression
● Fatigue
● Hallucinations
● Death (in severe cases)
Sleep - restoration and resources
1.Restoration
● Allows the body, and brain, to rest and repair.
● Believed to help the brain clear metabolic waste like amyloid beta.
2. Circadian rhythms
● The amount of sleep an animal has depends on how long it needs to gather food.
● Humans depend on vision, so we sleep when it’s dark and we’re least effective
3. Facilitation of learning
● Neural connections made during the day are strengthened during sleep.
● Research shows superior memory after sleep.
Sleep stages: EEG (Electroencephalogram)
Atypical sleep - Sleep disorders
1. Insomnia
● difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
2. Sleep apnea
● person stops breathing for brief periods while asleep.
3. Somnambulism
● “sleepwalking”, person arises and walks around while asleep.
4. Sleep paralysis
● waking up unable to move
5. Narcolepsy
● Sleep attacks during the day.
● Excessive sleepiness during the day.
● Sleep paralysis.
● Cataplexy attacks (muscle weakness in response to emotion).
6. Night terrors
● Abrupt awakenings with panic and intense emotional arousal, mostly REM.
