Physics A | 2.4 Assignment: Using Vectors to Represent Motion Lab
Purpose of Lab:
To practice adding and subtracting vectors to find the resultant vector.
Materials Used:
Vector Addition Phet Simulation, Computer
** If you prefer to write out your vectors and insert drawings, that is acceptable as well. **
You can go to: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/vector-addition to create your diagrams, or you can
write them out on your own.
Procedure:
OPTIONAL: If you are using the Phet Simulation:
To begin, get an arrow from the bucket. Each arrow will represent a vector. The magnitude of the
vector is found in the |R| box. The angle of the vector is in the θ box. Place the vectors you wish to
add head to tail. To get the resultant vector, hit the big “SUM” button. Move the green sum vector so
that the tail touches the tail of your first vector.

Data:
Answer the following questions using the vector simulation or draw the vectors and insert them when
required. Take a screenshot of the vectors that you used in the sim or recreate them using the drawing tools
in your document or another drawing program like Paint, or draw them by hand and insert the picture of your
drawing.

Questions
Consider an airplane flying at 40 km/hr north. The airplane is caught in a strong crosswind blowing at 30
km/hr from west to east. Hint: Click on the grid box and start your vectors at zero on the x, y axis. Then hit
the sum box to find the resultant vector. Make sure to line up the tail of the resultant vector with the tails of
the other vectors.

1. Will the airplane fly faster or slower than 40 km/hr. (1pt)

2. In what direction will the wind blow the airplane off course? (1pt)

3. Create a diagram or a screenshot of the vectors used to represent this motion (5pt)

Starting from your house, you walk 7.0 steps East at 0 degrees, and then you turn left and take 2.0 steps North
at 90 deg. Add the two vectors using the “sum” button.
