Prof. Klein,
This course has taught me so much about evidence based practice and how
to apply it to practice. Evidence based practice is a “problem solving
approach to clinical decision making” in which the information being
implemented is reliable evidence (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p. 604).
As Family nurse practitioner, when working as primary care provider to the
patients, and diagnosis them with specific disease. EBP would help select the
best treatment possible to cure the disease and achieve best possible
outcomes. For example, A 33-year-old Caucasian female presented with
complaints of atypical depressive symptoms that were causing her to miss
many days at work. As an FNP able to discover her symptoms have followed
a temporal pattern over the past 4 years, and was able to diagnose her with
seasonal affective disorder. How do I will be able to decide what treatment
to prescribe? Evidence-based practice!
Evidence-based practice simply refers to combining research, clinical
knowledge, and patient preferences to reach a health care decision. It
emphasizes the use of the highest-quality information and deemphasizes the
use of customs, opinions, or rituals to make a clinical judgment. The goal of
evidence-based practice is simple: provide care that is safe, effective, and
compassionate.
In going forward to pursue a culture that supports EBP, healthcare
organizations must acknowledge that, though the benefits are great, it will
take time, resources and strong commitment to put into effect.
And the path will not always be smooth, as modifications and revisions
are inevitable before consistently positive results are achieved.
With shared vision and shared commitment, as advance nurse
practitioner I would be help the organizations to achieve the level of
evidence-based practice that supports consistent, quality care for patients,
families, communities and populations.
Evidence-based practice allows nurses to enrich their clinical education and
experience with current research. With the large amount of research and
information that exists in nursing, learning the skills of evidence-based
practice allows nurses to search for, assess and apply the literature to their
