Complete the following required worksheet using the required article for the current session.
Access the required article from the assignment guidelines.
Purpose of the Study: Using information from the required article and your own words,
summarize the purpose of the study. Describe what the study is about.
The purpose of the study is to establish the prevalence of distress among patients undergoing
treatment of gynecologic cancers. In various instances, patients undergo distress in the course of
cancer treatment which further complicates the situation. The identification of distress and the
subsequent intervention mechanisms helps improve patient outcomes. However, failure to identify
the problem in advance may lead to adverse effects on patients. The study aims at identifying the
precise problems that cancer patients face in the course of treatment as well as evaluating the
perception of medical providers during distress screening using PL and DT.
Research & Design: Using information from the required article and your own words,
summarize the description of the type of research and the design of the study. Include how it
supports the purpose (aim or intent) of the study.
The study applies a mixed research design method. The study used both qualitative and
quantitative data. Qualitative data was collected through interviews to evaluate the perception of
healthcare providers when screening patients for distress. Interviews were conducted on with
HCPs in newborns tertiary and a public women’s hospital. The research used quantitative data to
establish the distress problems and levels. Quantitative data was conducted on a sample of 62
patients suffering from gynecologic cancer prior to seeing a doctor. They were later observed over
a period of 6 months.
Sample: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize the
population (sample) for the study; include key characteristics, sample size, sampling
technique.
The study used a sample of 62 patients in a pre-admission clinic suffering from gynecologic
cancer. The patients were all above 18 years and could understand and fill how to use the PL and
DT. Patients without prior cancer diagnosis, below 18 years, unable to give consent and unable to
understand and fill the PL and DT were excluded from the sample. The sample also included one
physiotherapist, two social workers and three nurses. The mean age of the sample was fifty-eight
years.
Data Collection: Using information from the required article and your own words,
summarize one data that was collected and how the data was collected from the study.
One data that was collected from the study is the level of distress among gynecologic cancer
patients. The data was collected using a distress thermometer. All patients included in the sample
were examined for distress level to determine the number of women suffering from the condition.
