This paper reviews the scope of practice for Florida nurse practitioners. It covers
general information as well as required certifications, licensure, and education
requirements. In addition, this paper will also cover the core competencies, leadership
skills, and different areas of advanced practice. The professional license that nurse
practitioners hold is governed by the Florida Nurse Practice Act and the Florida
Department of Health. Unfortunately, Florida is one of the most restricted practice states
in the United States. This means nurse practitioners need to abide by stricter guidelines
under the supervision of a doctor according to Florida state law. Furthermore, this plan
will provide information that will act as a guide for pursuing a nurse practitioner license
and certification.
APN Scope of Practice
In the state of Florida, the Florida a board of nursing currently regulates
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure. To become a nurse practitioner or
advance practice nurse, an individual must first be a registered nurse and hold a valid
registered nurse license from any jurisdiction and a Bachelor of science in nursing,
(BSN) degree (FBON, 2019). After obtaining a BSN, “a master’s degree or a post-
master’s certificate in a nursing clinical specialty area and a national advanced practice
certification from an approved nursing specialty board” is required before applying for
the Florida state board licensure (FBON, 2019). Comparable to applying for the RN
licensure from the Florida board of nursing, when applying to take the advanced
