The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation
As the healthcare industry merges into the technology field, it is vital nurse leaders
understand the applications of what is required when operating and designing a new technology
process. Technology has the capabilities to assist the healthcare professional in providing next
level quality patient care. When implementing a new technology program there are certain steps
to take in order for the process to take off. The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is
widely used in the healthcare industry for information system design and implementation. The
system development life cycle is a project management model that defines the stages involved in
bringing a project from inception to completion (Singletary & Baker, 2019, para. 2).
There are 5 stages in the SDLC cycle nurse leaders should be involved in and understand
how to utilize: 1) Planning and requirements definition. 2) Analysis. 4) Design of the new
system. 4) Implementation. 5) Post-implementation support. Completion of this essay will
identify and define the stages and contribution nurse leaders possess throughout SDLC.
Planning and requirements
The planning and requirement stage outlines the requirements for the application that will
be developed. When planning the development of new projects, you determine if there is a
potential demand for stakeholders; it requires a professional to understand who and how the
development of this technology benefits the organization. Requirements include the expectations
of the functions with the development. Understanding how the new development is beneficial to
those utilizing the product and if it convenes the vision of the stakeholders. According to Verma
and Gupta (2017), “Clinical nurse leaders and managers can contribute significantly in
explaining and putting the requirement in a coherent manner so that the product that comes out is
