A. Proposal
1. Identify problem or issue
The problem of growing burnout rates among U.S. nurses.
a. Explanation
Nurse burnout is a growing issue for nurses all across the US. The chosen area of
practice, hospice, is a field where nurse burnout is especially seen. Hospice nurses are expected to
provide high-quality and compassionate care to patients who are in the last 6 months of their life. In
addition to this, hospice nurses must know how to graciously communicate with the family of the patient,
and effectively collaborate with other health care workers who are involvedin the patient’s treatment. It is
not unusual for a hospice nurse to witness the death of one of their patients, as well as the crying and many
times wailing that comes from the family soon after. Thenurse must know how to tactfully go through the
process of pronouncing the patient dead, all while comforting and being understanding with the grieving
family. Because of the many challenges that come with working in this field, hospice nurses are much more
susceptible to experience burnout. Nurse burnout is arguably more applicable to hospice than to any other
nursing field. A burned out nurse can negatively impact the healthcare environment as this couldresult in
lower quality care for the patients and family, it could also discourage the other healthcare workers with
whom the nurse is collaborating. It is especially important for a hospice nurse to be cheerful and
emotionally strong, as they are caring for the patient in the last months of their life.
