Community Language Learning
Introduction:
Community language learning (CLL) is a language teaching method in which students
work together to develop what aspects of a language they would like to learn. It is also
known as counseling learning. In this approach the teacher act as a counsellor and a
paraphraser, while the learner is seen as a client and collaborator. Its good method to
practice speaking and listening.
Teacher and student’s role:
[Teacher = counselor / students = client]
Relationship between teacher and students:
[ dependency independency ]
Native language is permitted among students.
Translation will be provided by teacher.
Students apply the target language independently when they feel confident enough
to do so.
Advantages of CLL:
1. Works well with lower levels students who are struggling in spoken English.
2. It creates a warm, sympathetic and trusting relationship between teacher and
learners.
3. Train students to become independent.
4. Counselor allow the learners to determine type of conversation.
Disadvantages of CLL:
1. Some learners feel difficulty in speak.
2. Difficult in evaluation.
3. The teachers may not have special training to attempt counselling.
4. It is time consuming to carry out.
