1. Medication Administration for Peds
a. How to give pill to child and /or infant unable to swallow pill?
i. Crush it and put in apple sauce (1 bite)
b. How to administer liquid meds to infant or toddler?
i. Oral syringe, small amounts, give time to swallow
c. How to give meds through G or J tubes? (slide 17)
i. Crush, flush after, liquids if possible
2. Pharmacodynamics versus Pharmacokinetics (slide 3)
a. Dynamics- how its working in the body system : immature body systems
i. Behavior of medication at the cellular level
b. Kinetics- their weight, surface area, bmi, age, diseases effecting related organs
i. Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion
3. TPN
a. What is it?
i. Total parental nutrition
ii. HAS TO BE DELIVERED VIA CENTRAL LINE
b. Priority nursing concerns (slide 32)
i. Vitals, glucose, site care, closed system, has to be tapered off,
don’t stop abruptly
, ii. Vs, aseptic technique, ensure system remains closed, use
occlusive dressing/monitor insertion site, flush via hospital
policy, I&O, monitor glucose levels

a. Grimace, crying, Irribility, whimpering, vs ( hr up, 02 decrease)
b. Behavioral- facial expressions, body movements, crying, increased
Irribility, refusal to move injured body part, interrupted sleep
c. Physiologic- changes in hr (up), RR, O2, vagal tone, plantar/palmar sweating
2. What are factors that influence pain?
a. How long they were exposed, previous experiences, age, gender,
cognitive levels, temperament
b. Age, gender, cognitive level, temperament, previous pain experiences,
family and cultural background, situational factors
3. Which pain scales should be used for which age groups?
a. FLACC- infants
b. FACES- toddler
c. Numbers- talk understand 0-10
4. What are pharmacological interventions?
a. PCA, Tylenol, ibuprofen, morphine
5. What are nonpharmacological interventions?
a. Reposition, distraction, heat/cold, music, imagery, swaddling, sucrose,
relaxation, massage
