PHYS 103 - Milestone #3

1. Using the climograph, derive the average annual temperature and precipitation means
for the region. Discuss the seasonal variations in both parameters. Detail the results relative
to polar front theory.
After studying the climograph and looking at historical data, one can determine that the
average mean temperature is around 52° Fahrenheit (or 11.1° Celsius), while the mean
precipitation is going to be around 17 inches annually. Precipitation levels during the summer

months (particularly from May through October where the area receives less than 3 inches on

average) see a significant decrease as opposed to precipitation throughout the rest of the year.

Polar fronts occur when cold polar air meets warm tropical air at the mid-latitudes. The

Polar Front theory proposes that mid-latitude cyclones form on the boundaries where warm and
cold air meet causing a sharp gradient of temperature to occur between the two. These cyclones

can range from very mild weather with only a little rain and wind, or they can be severe with

torrential rains and destructive winds. These polar fronts drive precipitation throughout the year,
with low pressure bringing in more rainfall as the warm air rises and cools, creating

condensation. While the high pressure systems bring in dry weather as the air is forced down
towards the surface.

2. Using your knowledge of the atmosphere and the information present in the climograph,
Th
discuss the most prevalent types of storms that affect this area, by season.
Weather is fairly unpredictable, but looking at historical data for a region can give a
sh
pretty good idea of what to expect in the future. Looking at the higher precipitation rates during
the winter months, we can conclude that snowfall is likely, as well as possible thundersnow as
