Identify the problem: There are limited photos available of brown-skinned patients in medical
textbooks used for training medical professionals.
Analyze the problem: Break down the problem into smaller parts and examine each one
carefully. Look at it from different angles and perspectives. Who are the stakeholders? What is
their view?
Medical Textbook Companies
The medical textbook companies have shown the perspectives influenced by the
stereotypical societal norms related to different cultures. Black people are never considered
as a significant part of society and therefore, they are not examined appropriately or
photographed for the purpose of medical trainings (Yearby, 2021).
Universities who purchase and use textbooks
The owners of Universities have depicted the idea that they do not use textbooks containing
Black people as patients because of unavailability in the market. They are blaming the
medical text book companies for not publishing those books that contain images of Black
people as patients (Slaughter-Acey et al., 2019).
Students of universities/medical schools
Medical students have shared that they are unaware of various signs and symptoms related to
dermatological disorders associated with darker skin tone. The students have discussed that
their knowledge is based on the photographs that are present in the medical text books and

, majority of these books contain images of fair skin tone
(Kadiyo & Mellish, 2021).
Darker-skinned patients who consent/refuse to have their pictures used
The Black people have reflected an idea related to prejudiced behavior of society. Black
people has stated that the societal norms are always against their race and the society has
always considered them as worthless. They have also stated that the healthcare sector has
always showed biased behavior and has ignored their healthcare rights. Moreover, the
healthcare sector has misused them for various research purposes. The black people has
stated that they do not trust the healthcare sector because of bad incidents associated with
their past. Therefore, majority of them refuse to have their pictures because, they think that
these pictures will be misused against them by the healthcare sector again (Malatzky, Haines
& Glenister, 2020).
Medical Professionals (former students)
The medical professionals have stated that the absence of dark skin tone patients in the
medical textbooks have caused them to show inefficiency during the diagnosis. Majority of
the black people are diagnosed in advanced diseased stage therefore the mortality rates
associated with black people are more as compared to white people. They also discussed that
the black skin tone is more prone to pigmentation and is vulnerable to develop severe
dermatological disorders. However, the lack of knowledge and training related to darker
skinned patients have not improved their skills on making correct diagnoses on time
(Malatzky, Haines & Glenister, 2020).
