Another Trojan Horse

I. PROBLEM & SOLUTION
Problem: One of the biggest challenges for this company was the change in mindset from an
operating company to a project management company. The transition from an operating company
to a project management company could result in difficulty when a person has spent their entire
career focusing on project execution. The tendency for that type of person might be to revert to
old ways.
Solution: They looked for the latest project management techniques and undergone four - day
training regarding Scope Management, Cost Management, Time Management, and Risk
Management to be equipped upon the execution of the plan.
II. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
John Lackey received an award for Best Project Management of Utility Plant in the United States
in 2000 since the Trojan Nuclear Plant, was formally shut down in 1996. To begin with, when it
comes to shutting down a nuclear plant, removing it, and placing it in an area for safety in the
future, it was easier said than done. However, it needs to be at least relocated since the plant was
near a city that could cause harm to the people living within and near the area. The nuclear plant
was named Trojan and was considered the largest and most powerful nuclear plant of its day and
it would need to undergo decommissioning since it was an essential part of the plant lifecycle.
Thus, it would require a carefully planned project whereas every tiny detail must be calculated,
studied, and revised to increase the percentage of success of the project before it could be executed.
There was no room for errors in this project due to its potential harm, thus, the project would be
examined not only by the authorities but by the general public as well. John and his company have
undergone a four-day training course to ensure that they are equipped to complete the project. To
start with the decommissioning of the plant, the project was broken down into smaller projects so
that they could apply their newly acquired skills in project management. One of the projects was
the elimination of the central reactor which includes relocating the entire reactor hundreds of miles
from the plant location. It was the first attempt and would be the biggest and most complicated
whereas the safest way to eradicate the reactor was in one piece carefully without damaging any
part of the reactor. Fortunately, they succeeded in safely lifting the reactor and placing it at its final
destination. They managed every detail of the move and the move was a success. Thus, the team
and the company had made their spot on the pages of project management history.
