Non-metals
1. Give examples for non metals.
Non-metals are the elements which form negative ions by gaining electrons.
Hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, sulphur, silicon and phosphorous are some of the non –
metals.
2. Mention the physical state in which the non metals occur?
All the non – metals are either solids or gases, except bromine which is a liquid non –
metal at the room temperature.
3. Name the non metal which is placed on the left side of the periodic table.
Only one non – metal hydrogen (H) has been placed on the left side of the
periodic table.
4. Write the electronic configuration of C, N, O, F and Ne.
Carbon 1s2 2s2 2p2
Nitrogen 1s2 2s2 2p3
Oxygen 1s2 2s2 2p4
Fluorine 1s2 2s2 2p5
Neon 1s2 2s2 2p6
5. What is the action of heat on C and S and subsequently heating the gaseous product
in water? Write balanced chemical equation.
Non – metals like carbon and sulphur combine with oxygen to form CO2 and SO2
respectively. These oxides dissolve in water to give carbonic acid and sulphurous acid.
C + O2 CO2 (g)
CO2 (g) + H2O H2CO3
(Carbonic acid)
, S + O2 SO2 (g)
SO2 (g) + H2O H2SO3
Sulphurous acid
6. What is the action of chlorine on (i) phosphours and (ii) hydrogen. Write balanced
chemical equation.
Phosphorus and hydrogen react with chlorine to form phosphorus trichloride and
hydrogen chloride respectively.
P4 + 6Cl2 4 PCl3 (g)
H2 + Cl2 2 HCl (g)
7. Complete and balance the following equations.
(i) H2 + ……… H2 S (g)
(ii) ………. + 3H2 2NH3 (g)
(i) H2 + S H2 S (g)
(ii) N2 + 3H2 2NH3 (g)
8. Explain why silicon occur in the form of compounds.
Owing to its great affinity for oxygen, silicon always occurs in the form of its
compounds like silicon dioxide and silicates. It is always present as a compound.
9. Name the different forms of silica.
The various forms are sand, flint, quartz and opal.
10. How is prepared silicon?
Silicon is prepared by heating potassium fluosilicates with potassium.
K2SiF6 + 4K 6KF + Si
