Week 8 discussion America and Terrorism in the 21st century
Professor and classmates,
Terrorism on the home front is a detrimental occurrence that has happened more times than we
probably actually realize. According to vocabulary.com an act of terrorism is defined as: “the calculated
use of violence or threat of violence, against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or
religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear”[

Act19 \l 1033 ] In doing my research I found that there were 467 documented acts of terror committed
since 1865 in the United States[ CITATION Joh19 \l 1033 ], starting with the assignation of President
Abraham Lincoln. The Three terrorist activities that I have chosen to discuss were terrible acts against
our country. The first was the Oklahoma City bombing carried out by Timothy McVeigh. The 2nd was very
detrimental to our country and will be remembered forever, the 9/11 bombing of the World Trade
Centers and lastly the Boston Marathon both of which were done by Islamic terrorists. I remember
where I was for two out of the three of these terrorist attacks and will never forget how I felt those
days.
The Oklahoma City bombing occurred on April 19, 1995 and was carried out by Timothy McVeigh. The
bombing was deemed an anti-government message from McVeigh because feared that the government
was going to repeal the 2nd amendment. This was considered one of the deadliest acts of terrorism, at
that time, in American history, [ CITATION Bio17 \l 1033 ]. On that day 169 men, women and children lost
their life and 675 more were injured because if this senseless act.
I’m sure that everyone here can agree that they can remember where and what they were doing on
Tuesday, September 11, 2001 in the early morning. It is a day that America will never forget, when she
was attacked by the Islamic terrorist group “al-Qaeda” that killed more than 2,700 people and injured
more than 8,900 hitting the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the plane that went down in
Pennsylvania[ CITATION Joh19 \l 1033 ]. That day, President Bush, promised us that those responsible
would be brought to justice by whatever means necessary[ CITATION Cor19 \l 1033 ]. That attack on the
U.S. brought world leaders and their citizen’s complete support to bring this terrorist organization
down[ CITATION Cor19 \l 1033 ].
The Boston Marathon bombing, on April 15, 2013, was also completed by Islamic terrorist that killed 3
people and injured 264 more[ CITATION Joh19 \l 1033 ]. This act was done by two brothers that were
raised in Boston and had radical Muslim beliefs and one had been convicted of domestic violence and
the other was sought out for being a possible threat to the US, both remained citizens and nothing was
done to either of them[ CITATION Joh19 \l 1033 ].
Analyze the responsibility of the United States today to be the world's "policeman."
I do think that the United States should partially be the world’s “policeman” in today’s society. We are a
very powerful country and for the most part many of the other countries welcome us as a protector for
them. I feel that we should be there, in the background, but we should also allow them to build
themselves up to be their own police. We should not be the “mother” that always bails them out or
makes sure that they are protected all the time. It would be like a mother bird and her babies, they have
