How is salmonellosis diagnosed?
Your Answer:
By testing the O and H antigen using antisera that react wuth a single antigen or group of related
antigens. This is costly so many countries only perform the O antigen testing. Ths wont change/affect
the treatment plan. A stool sample can diagnose salmonella in an individual.
Many diseases can cause fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. As a result,
salmonellosis cannot be diagnosed based on symptoms alone. Because Salmonella
most often reside in the gastrointestinal tract, salmonellosis is usually diagnosed by
isolating the organism from the stool of the patient, although it can sometimes be
isolated from blood and other bodily fluids. Stools specimens should be collected during
the period of active diarrhea (preferably as soon after onset of symptoms as possible).
