Dr Seye Adeniran
Dept. of Anatomic Pathology
, INTRODUCTION
• Arteriosclerosis is the hardening of the arteries.
• Associated with arterial wall thickening & loss of
elasticity.
• 3 patterns with differing clinical & pathologic
consequences are recognised:
I. Arteriolosclerosis (small arteries; hyaline
and hyperplastic types).
II. Monckeberg media calcific sclerosis
(muscular arteries).
III. Atherosclerosis.
, INTRODUCTION
I. Arteriolosclerosis (small arteries;
hyaline and hyperplastic types): this type
is common in the kidney, retina, and small
arteries.
II. Monckeberg media calcific sclerosis
(muscular arteries): this pattern is seen in
elderly people.
III. Atherosclerosis.
