Abstract
Dementia is a significant public health issue that is increasing behind
bars. Current research has exposed a serious gap in correctional health
care for dementia in individuals .and corrections are encouraged to make
c h a n g e s t o m e e t t h e n e e d s o f t h e d e m e n t i a p o p u l a t i o n ( F e l l e n e r, 2 0 1 2 ,

Introduction
I n A m e r i c a ’s p r i s o n s , a b o u t 1 0 % o f t h e 1 . 6 m i l l i o n i n m a t e s a r e s e r v i n g
life sentences, of the people sent to prison in 2010, 9560 people were 55
y e a r s a n d o l d e r. N o o n e i s p a y i n g a t t e n t i o n t o c o g n i t i v e l y i m p a i r e d
inmates; experts say they are more prone to dementia due to higher
morbidity rates than other inmates. Our prisons are overcrowded and
understaffed, the behavior of dementia patients contributes to caring
challenges and higher medical costs. Dementia patients need protection
from other younger population. These patients become paranoid or
confused, some attack staff or other inmates, and provoke fights by
w a n d e r i n g i n t o s o m e o n e e l s e ’s c e l l , p a t i e n t s a r e u n a b l e t o f o l l o w s e c u r i t y
