The use of supernatural machinery in _The rape of the lock_ by Alexander Pope
Pope’s object in introducing the supernatural elements in the rape of the lock was to heighten the mock-heroic effect of the poem and at the same time it gives reader more impersonal in tone. Pope adopted the Rosicrucian doctrine of spirits and introduced the sylphs and gnomes as the supernatural machinery in the poem.
