AIRWAY
Most important
Client is awake & responsive = Airway is open
Lost ability to maintain airway Inspect for blood, broken teeth, vomitus, or objects obstructing airway
Airway not patent Hypoxia, brain damage, or death can result within 3-5 mins
Client unresponsive WITHOUT suspicion of trauma = head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver
Client unresponsive WITH suspicion of trauma = modified jaw thrust maneuver
Once opened inspect for objects obstructing
o If object present & VISIBLE suction or finger-sweep
To maintain open airway use:
o 1. Oropharyngeal
CANNOT have gag reflex present
o 2. Nasopharyngeal
CANNOT have any facial or skull fractures
For additional support during resuscitation = Bag valve mask with 100% oxygen until airway is established
Client spontaneously breathing = Non-rebreather mask with 100% oxygen
