CLASS XI
SUB: PHYSICS THEORY (042)
TERM II
MM : 35 TIME : 2 Hours
General Instructions:
(i) There are 12 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(ii) This question paper has three sections: Section A, Section B and Section C.
(iii) Section A contains three questions of two marks each, Section B contains eight
questions of three marks each, Section C contains one case study-based question of five
marks.
(iv) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one
question of two marks and two questions of three marks. You have to attempt only
one of the choices in such questions.
(v) You may use log tables if necessary but use of calculator is not allowed.
SECTION A
Q1.Which is more elastic – rubber or steel?
OR
Figure shows the strain-stress curve for a given material. What are:
(a) Young’s modulus and
(b)approximate yield strength for this material?
Q2.A hydraulic automobile lift is designed to lift cars with a maximum mass of 3000kg.The area
of cross section of the piston carrying the load is 425 cm 2.What maximum pressure would the
smaller piston have to bear?
Q3.On what factors does the amount of heat flowing a substance depend? Obtain the expression
for the heat conduct.
SECTION B
Q4.a) State first law of thermodynamics.
b)At 00 and normal atmospheric pressure, the volume of 1g of water increases from 1 cm 3 to
1.091 cm 3 on freezing .What will be the change in its internal energy? Normal atmospheric
pressure is 1.013 x 10 5 N/m2 and latent heat of melting of ice is 80 cal /g.
Q5.a)On the basis of kinetic theory ,derive an expression for pressure exerted by an ideal gas.
b) An air bubble of volume 1.0 cm 3 rises from the bottom of a lake 40 m deep at a temperature
of 120C .To what volume does it grow, when it reaches the surface, which is at a temperature
of 350C?
