HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020 IMPACT
The Healthy People initiative is charged with the ultimate goal of improving the health of
the American public utilizing evidence-based practices. “Healthy People 2020 contains 42 topic
areas with over 1,200 objectives” (Healthy People 2020, 2019). The topic of interest this paper
covers is Maternal, Infant, and Child Health. The topic covers a wide spectrum of subtopics, but
this paper will specifically address childhood obesity, inadequate nutrition, and unhealthy
weight. In an article by Ogden, et al (2018), “CDC analyzed 2011–2014 data from the National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to obtain estimates of childhood obesity prevalence by
household income and head of household education level (high school graduate or less, some
college, and college graduate)” (p. 186). Aranceta-Batrina and Perez-Rodrigo (2016) determined
that rates of childhood obesity are at an alarmingly high rate, and are increasing annually, with
an estimated 42 million children suffering from childhood obesity worldwide, according to the
World Health Organization (p. 18). The overall target for childhood obesity, outlined by Healthy
People 2020, is less than a 14.5% prevalence (Healthy People 2020, 2019).
The Healthy People 2020 initiative identifies childhood obesity and the ramifications
associated with this disease as a significant problem in the United States. Maintaining the health
of the future generations of this country is so vital and identifying that it starts with education
and lifestyle changes is only the start. According to Sonntag (2017), childhood obesity burdens
the economy with direct costs, in healthcare due to an increased risk of developing obesity-
associated diseases that need treatment, and indirect costs related to sick leave, reduced
productivity, and premature death (p. 175).
Overview of Problem
Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health problems in today’s society. It
affects not only children in the United States, but children all across the globe with some of the
