Phet Simulation Gene Expression
Goal: Students can describe the process and effects of gene expression
Click the link for the Gene Expression Essentials lab simulation
Highlight/use bold or color your answers.
Go to the “Expression” Tab. Start on Gene #1
1. On which molecule is all of this based? (1 point)
Positive transcription factor
2. What do you think the difference in the color of strands represents? Are they that color in real
DNA? (1 point)
Different strands of DNA, I don’t believe they are really that color.
For the next several questions: think about what/where things are at the start, and what/ where things
are at the end of the process. Explain both of those parts when explaining what the biological
macromolecule/enzyme does.
3. What does the “Positive Transcription Factor” do? (1 point)
Transcribe Dna into Rna
4. What does the “RNA Polymerase” do? (1 point)
The primary transcript
5. What does the “mRNA destroyer” do? (1 point)
Reads RNA to produce proteins
6. What does the “negative transcription” factor do? (1 point)
Preventens transcription of some DNA.
7. What does “Ribosome” do? (1 point)
Bind RNA and transfer rna to proteins
Go to Gene #2
8. What does Gene #2 have to have to make mRNA, that gene #1 didn’t? (1 point)
A second positive transcription.
Go to Gene #3
