In this weeks assignment I was tasked to read an article by Alison Motluk entitled “A tool
kit for the real world”. In this article the author discussed the significance of communication
skills in a field that many people believe are not essential for that specific field. In this paper I
will discuss my personal opinion on this article, as well as address my belief on if
communication skills are necessary in every type of organization. I will also discuss the type of
organization that I would potentially work for, and how communication skills would facilitate me
in said organization.
In Alison Motluk’s article “ A tool kit for the real world”, she sheds light on how critical
communication skills are in surviving within an organizations culture. For this particular article
the science industry was used. Motluk spoke on how many science graduates possess great skill
within the specialized occupation in which they operate, but lack the communication skills
needed in order to make the transition from academia to the corporate world. According to the
article, a scientists worth is contingent on how many papers they publish, as well as their ability
to present their message to large groups of fellow scientists and the like. This is fine if he/she
plans to remain in the science industry, but they are doing themselves a disservice by not being
able to communicate outside of the science realm. As Walter Issacson argues in his book The
Innovators, “In order to innovate, it’s not enough to just come up with big ideas, you also need
to work hard to communicate them clearly” (Issacson, 2014).
Take for example English scientist Michael Faraday, who made significant contributions
to the electromagnetism and electrochemistry fields and transformed electricity into the
workhorse of the modern age. Faraday’s invention of the electromagnetic rotary device gave
birth to the creation of electric motor technology. That being said, not only was he a brilliant
scientist, but I also learned that he was an effective communicator. In the book, Faraday,
