A.1 - Video #403: Applying Momentum While Learning and
Practicing the Vertical Jumping
For the first video, I observed a 3rd grade class having a physical education lesson in their
school gymnasium. There were 22 students present with ages ranging from 8 to 9 years old.
While it was hard to pinpoint from the video how many of the students were boys or girls it did
however look like an even mix of each. These students come from low income families and 8 of
the 22 students are English Language Learners (ELL). Also, one of the students has a health
impairment that can make learning difficult for themselves and students around him/her. The
teacher sets up her lesson to appeal to the vast needs of her class. By having the students
physically experience the lesson of momentum by vertical jump in several ways she is really
connecting the action to the definition for them.
A.2
The learning theory of Jean Piaget is the theory that best aligns with the teacher’s
instructional and assessment strategy from this video. Piaget’s theory of learning involves
children “interacting with the world around them, continually adding new knowledge, building
upon existing knowledge, and adapting previously held ideas to accommodate new information”
(Cherry). Based on this information from Piaget’s theory, I observed the physical education
teacher use schema to help her with this instructional lesson. She had taught the students in
previous school years so she knew they had the schema of the vertical jump and its purpose. The
new information of momentum taught in this lesson added to or changed the students existing
schema. To help the students’ progress in their jumping, the teacher starts the lesson with getting
the students to demonstrate the vertical jump. The next part of the lesson is to get the students to
